The Oklahoma State University Equine Program is home to over 60 registered Quarter Horses. The history of this organization dates back to as far as 1902. This once small program has evolved into a great piece to Oklahoma State. The equestrian program is not only a place to enjoy horses but also a place to study them. The undergraduate program offers many courses to help in following your passion. The Oklahoma State University Horseman’s Association is a great club to gain knowledge about horses and the horse industry. The equine program has always been, and will continue to be a great teaching and extension tool at Oklahoma State University.
The equestrian program broke ground and built their first horse barn in 1902. At this time, they were home to the some of best draft horses in the country. Like many programs, they had their difficulties. The horse barn was closed and subsequently removed, in the mid 1950’s. Since then, the horse industry has exploded with interest. In 1977, the Oklahoma State Equine Program was resurrected. Unlike the last program, this new start brought a new breed of horses to OSU, the American Quarter Horse. Contributions from the Oklahoma Horseman, The Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association, and Oklahoma residents, the OSU Equine Program was rebuilt to be great once again. The staff of the equine program has made a great quality of horses at Oklahoma State. Thanks to them, the equestrian program and activities has continued to expand here at OSU.
A great branch of the Oklahoma State Equine Program is the undergraduate program. The curriculum consists of nearly six different courses focused on horses. These classes range from nutrition, selection, reproduction, and management. These classes offer a wide variety of options to anyone interested in learning about horses. The undergraduate program also provides internships with farms, trainers, and equine associations. Students have had the opportunity to work with notable ranches, major breed associations and nutritional companies. The equine program has given many students not only a great place to learn, but also given them opportunities to succeed in the future.
The OSU Horseman’s Association is another fantastic addition to the Oklahoma State Equine Program. “It was formed to meet the needs of students with a passion for horse.” The Association is a helpful addition to further student’s knowledge about horses. They are also another tool in finding internships and job opportunities. The association holds many activities, clinics, and field trips that all add to your education. The OSU Horseman’s Association also enjoys helping Oklahoma 4-H members with their horse related projects. They have meetings every Wednesday along with fun activities. The Oklahoma State University Horseman’s Association is a great place to meet people who enjoy learning about horses and participating in horse related activities.
The Oklahoma State University Equine Program is an outstanding component of the department of animal science and a great part of OSU. The history of the Oklahoma State Equine Program demonstrates their ability to adapt to a changing industry. The additional classes offered further any horse enthusiasts education as well as preparing them for a positive future. The activities the OSU Horseman’s Association provides are extremely helpful when looking to become a part of the horse industry. All these aspects of the equine program make it a very important part of Oklahoma State University’s heritage and a successful component of the universities future.
